Bertillon, Alphonse

(1853-1914)
   criminologist
Born in Paris, Alphonse Bertillon was a chief of the judicial identification bureau of the Paris police prefecture. In 1882, he created the field of anthropometry (known also as the Bertillon system), as a method for identifying criminals. The system records anthropometric measurements and personal characteristics, such as eye color and distinctive markings. Because the Bertillon measurements are difficult to assess with uniform exactness, his system has largely been superseded by the use of fingerprinting and other methods as the principal means of identification in modern police procedures.
